چکیده

The synthesis of polymers from renewable resources is a burning issue that is actively investigated. Polyepoxide networks constitute a major class of thermosetting polymers and are extensively used as coatings, electronic materials, adhesives. Owing to their outstanding mechanical and electrical properties, chemical resistance, adhesion, and minimal shrinkage after curing, they are used in structural applications as well. Most of these thermosets are industrially manufactured from bisphenol A (BPA), a substance that was initially synthesized as a chemical estrogen. The awareness on BPA toxicity combined with the limited availability and volatile cost of fossil resources and the non-recyclability of thermosets implies necessary changes in the field of epoxy networks. Thus, substitution of BPA has witnessed an increasing number of studies both from the academic and industrial sides. This review proposes to give an overview of the reported aromatic multifunctional epoxide building blocks synthesized from biomass or from molecules that could be obtained from transformed biomass. After a reminder of the main glycidylation routes and mechanisms and the recent knowledge on BPA toxicity and legal issues, this review will provide a brief description of the main natural sources of aromatic molecules. The different epoxy prepolymers will then be organized from simple, mono-aromatic di-epoxy, to mono-aromatic poly-epoxy, to di-aromatic di-epoxy compounds, and finally to derivatives possessing numerous aromatic rings and epoxy groups.

Increase of tensile strength and toughness of bio-based diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A with chitin nanowhiskers

It is challenging to reinforce and toughen thermoset epoxy resins. We describe a slurry-compounding technique to transfer a uniform dispersion of chitin nanowhiskers (CW) in ethanol into an epoxy matrix. The incorporation of the hydrophilic CW reinforces the oil-soluble diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA). The resultant CW/epoxy bionanocomposites were transparent and showed considerably enh...

Epoxy thermosets from model mixtures of the lignin-to-vanillin process

Epoxy thermosets were prepared from mixtures of phenolics modelling the product stream of the ligninto-vanillin process. Vanillin is one of the only mono-aromatic compounds produced on an industrial scale from lignin. This process leads to mixtures of phenolic compounds. Isolation of pure vanillin is costly both economically and environmentally. The present work demonstrates that these purifica...

Microdeformation of a polydomain, smectic liquid crystalline thermoset

The microdeformation and fracture mechanisms of a densely crosslinked, polydomain, smectic liquid crystalline thermoset (LCT) were investigated in order to gain some insight into its interesting mechanical properties (e.g. improved fracture toughness). A difunctional LC epoxy monomer, diglycidyl ether of 4,4′-dihydroxy-α-methylstilbene (DGDHMS), was crosslinked with the tetrafunctional, aromati...

Innovative Chemical Process for Recycling Thermosets Cured with Recyclamines® by Converting Bio-Epoxy Composites in Reusable Thermoplastic—An LCA Study

An innovative recycling process for thermoset polymer composites developed by Connora Technologies (Hayward, CA, USA) was studied. The process efficacy has already been tested, and it is currently working at the plant level. The main aspect investigated in the present paper was the environmental impact by means of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method. Because of the need to recycle and recove...

Characterization of clay-modified thermoset polymers under various environmental conditions for the use in high-voltage power pylons

The effect of nanoclay on various material properties like damping and strength of typical thermoset polymers, such as epoxy and vinyl ester, was investigated. Different environmental conditions typical for high-voltage transmission pylons made of composite materials were taken into account. Resin samples were prepared with various clay weight fractions ranging from 0% to 3%. Scanning electron ...
